La Coruña, 25 May 2026.- Ecoener has been awarded an €8.4 million grant to modernize the small hydroelectric power stations of Xestosa and Landro (Ourol, Lugo), Cierves (Ribadavia, Ourense) and Peneda (A Arnoia, Ourense).
This grant will, in a pioneering move, enable the integration of the company’s first energy storage systems into its hydroelectric assets, contributing to more efficient management by enhancing flexibility and integration into the power grid. Specifically, storage systems with a capacity of 55 MWh will be installed: 25 MWh in Landro, 20 MWh in Cierves and 10 MWh in Xestosa.
As part of its growth strategy, Ecoener is promoting the integration of its assets with energy storage systems. In the Canary Islands, the company is currently carrying out several projects with batteries for a total capacity of 77.6 MWh and similar initiatives in the Dominican Republic, Romania and Guatemala.
The funding will enable the technological and environmental renovation, as well as a reduction in the environmental impact, of facilities with a combined capacity of 30.1 MW, aligning them with the most stringent European standards.
“These renovation and environmental improvement projects strengthen Ecoener’s commitment to renewable generation and energy transition in rural Galicia. These facilities are a fine example of landscape integration and utmost respect for the environment”, said Luis de Valdivia, Chairman of Ecoener.
The investment for the renovation of these small power station will amount to €21 million.
European Funds
As set out in the draft resolution recently published, the company has been chosen in the Second Call for Applications of the IDAE’s (Spanish Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy) Circular Repowering Programme within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union’s Next Generation EU funds.
